Sonata in D (complete)
Notes:
This work was published in 1780 as one of a group of six sonatas per il cembalo o fortepiano, meaning that it could ostensibly be played either on the harpsichord or fortepiano. Apparently the publisher did not want to exclude any part of the keyboard market. The piece is particularly well suited to the sonority of the small Broadwood square piano, c. 1825. With its sweet-sounding treble and buzzy bass register, the instrument gives definition to both the cheerful character of the quick movements and the meditative sarabande in the middle of the sonata.
