Notes:
Besides the wonderfully inventive variations by Narvāez, other keyboard and vihuela composers also wrote settings of this song, including Alonso Mudarra and Antonio Cabezon. The variations by Narvāez are more pared-down than those of his contemporaries, but no less creative. They seem to encompass dance rhythms, fantasia or tiento (contrapuntal vocal) style and the usual running divisions. Narvāez added three more variations, but cunningly change to key to prevent the feeling of sameness. At the end he treats the melody as a cantus firmus, with the bass line weaving around the notes as they are held in the upper register. Though not as wide-ranging as the Conde Claros variations, the use of the instrument is brilliant and original. |
