Musète de Taverni
| Composer:
Couperin, François |
Notes:
The stepwise melody, triple rhythm and restricted range of the Musète de Taverni make it well suited to the mandore, a small lute with five or six courses, popular for playing folk tunes and as an amateur's instrument. It is distinguished from the mandolin by having gut strings and being played by the fingers rather than with a plectrum. Its penetrating sound and high pitch suggest the hurdy-gurdy's little buzzing side string, referred to in French as "le mouche" (the fly).
