Tombeau for Glenn Gould
Notes:
There is an age-old tradition among lutenists and harpsichordists of writing funeral lamentation pieces in the form of Allemandes or Pavanes. (See the Tombeau for Mezangeau and the Lamento for Ferdinand III.) I used fragments of the Aria of the Goldberg Variations, a piece with which Gould is widely identified, played on the harpsichord in G major, to interrupt a Tombeau in the form of an Allemande, later changing to a Passacaille, in the key F sharp minor, based on the Aria's bass line. This key was the elegiac "ton de la chèvre" (key of the goat) for the French lutenists of the 17th century. The final section features the bleating vibrato and descending and ascending chromatic lines which depict the soul's transcendence.
