Sonata K. 331 (complete)
Notes:
If Mozart's aim was to write a hit, he was certainly successful with K. 331. The piece opens with a set of improvisational variations on a simple theme. The fourth variation imitates an alpine folk song with the use of crossed hands and a melody which is shadowed in the upper register. This mood is revisited in the Trio of the second movement - a Minuet with an aristocratic Austrian air. Mozart evidently knew that everyone loves a parade and in the closing Rondo, a raucous carnival Marcia alla Turca with clanging bell-trees and cymbals, he made a deliberate appeal to the public in Paris, where the piece was written.
