La Sylva is a transcription of a viol piece by Antoine Forqueray senior by his son Antoine and it may have inspired the composition of Les Sylvains by François Couperin. The mythological allusion to a wood-nymph reflects the idealized naturalism of the French Classical tradition, and suggests the unrequited love of Apollo for Daphne. |
