This Galliard appears in "Varietie of Lute Lessons" (1610), anthologized by John Dowland's son, Robert. The piece also exists in an earlier version, which clearly shows its imitation of the bagpipe melodies of the Celtic music traditions with which Dowland, an Irish Catholic, would have been familiar. |
