Notes:
Fantasia sobre fa mi ut re is another of Mudarra’s technically complex pieces which seems to imitate the style of the organ or keyboard instruments. The title refers to the the solmization syllables of the notes of the theme: f, e, c, d in modern notation. These four notes are heard throughout the work, transposed onto different pitches and requiring tortuous finger-breaking positions. The sheer cleverness of the writing is probably intended as a nose-thumbing gesture to the detractors of fretted instruments, those who maintained that strict counterpoint is not possible on them. |
