Ordre 25 by François Couperin
Originally there were two more pieces in Ordre 25, but in his foreword Couperin stated that the first and third movements were lost. The suite opens with the overture La Visionaire(The Seer), whose long resonant chords are followed by flurries of rapid notes. The second section is a quick dance tune. La Mistérieuse (The Mysterious One) is a gentle allemande reminiscent of the work of François Couperin's uncle, Louis. In La Monflambert (Monflambert's Piece), a character portrait, the composer infuses a folk melody with refined ornamentation and the subtle unequal rhythms found in the work of all the claviçinistes. In La Muse Victorieuse (The Victorious Muse) I used all three choirs of strings to underline the rhythmic vitality and dramatic changes of range which make the piece glitter. Ordre 25 ends with the legato whispering of Les Ombres Errantes (Wandering Shadows). The peau de bufle (a leather-quilled set of jacks) was used to enhance the constantly descending chromatic melody.
